Louis Frangella

Graduation Year: 2013

Current Job Position/Title and Company: Senior Manager - Sponsorship Account Services, Major League Baseball

Clubs/Activities Participated in While at Fordham: I spent a good part of my time at Fordham building the Business of Sports Society, which I co-founded with a current colleague of mine at Major League Baseball. It became an official Fordham University club in 2012. Building this organization helped my fellow colleagues at Fordham by opening the door to the sports industry through face-to-face interactions with professionals in the industry. It also helped me with building my own brand identity as a young professional – it allowed me to create an authentic connection with those same sports business pros that were leading out club speaker events and company site visits. I still remain in touch with a lot of those professionals today, and the Business of Sports Society at Fordham is still going strong

What Led You to Choose Your Current Job?: My first internship was at the MLB Fan Cave which was a project that MLB launched in 2010. Since then, working at MLB after I graduated had always been my goal. I tried to be conscious about building a career path of skills and experiences in marketing strategy, sponsorship and client services that would lead me to where I am now. I’ve previously managed multi-million dollar sponsorships for Brooklyn Nets, New York Islanders and Barclays Center, and most recently held a similar role at a real-estate development company. Now I get to do what at love within the sport I’m most passionate about. As far as why I chose my current job, MLB is one of the most innovative companies in the world. For my role in particular, I get to learn about, and become the internal champion, for renowned brands – working closely with them to develop and execute marketing strategies to achieve their and our goals together. MLB also has a large portfolio of valuable marketing assets spanning across all types of digital platforms – social, OTT, web, etc. – including offline events like the All-Star Game and MLB Postseason. I walk in the doors each day feeling very excited to make an impact, and very lucky to be able to do what I’m passionate about.

Advice for Current Fordham Students:

Build and strengthen your network daily. Don’t be afraid to reach out to someone that has a job that you find interesting to you. Most people are receptive to introductory outreach and want to help. This is even easier (and more important) when you’re interning within an organization. Get to know as many people as possible within department you’re in, as well as other internal counterparts at the company. Everyone is important and you never know when or where you may run into them later on in your career. Ask to shadow someone for a day. Some people are open to it and might need your help. When you get the opportunity to do so, make the most of it. It could turn into an even larger opportunity for you. Find out the skills your missing and go get them. Take a look at jobs that interest you and see what those requirements are. In your downtime, take the opportunity to educate yourself on something that might be important for the role. It could be anything from an online course in digital marketing or even a conversation with someone that has the role you want. Find out what makes them successful in that role and start preparing for your opportunity.
